7 levels of Spiritual Development​(Ibn Idris, Kunuz p 156)​

 

There are 7 (seven) levels of Spiritual Development and their characteristics:

1.NAFS AMMARA – Self which Incites Evil (Al-Quran 12:53) – ​Stinginess, greediness, proud, demanding luxury, demanding fame, hatred, revenge, neglect

2.NAFS LAWWAMA – Self Admonishing (Al-Quran 75:2)​ – Regret, guilt, self-criticism, proud of their good deeds.​

3.NAFS MULHAMA – Inspired Self (Al-Quran 90:-7-8) – Selfless (not in love with dunia), being grateful with all belongings, knowledgable, repentance, patience towards troubles​

4.NAFS MUTHMAINNA- Tranquil Self (Al-Quran 89:27)- Generous, Trust in Allah, Tranquil, Thankful, Resign to Allah’s Will (Rida), true tawakal, true taqwa​

5.NAFS RADIYYA – Contented Self (Al-Quran 89:28) – ​Zahid, ikhlas, warak, Leave actions which are not useful, ​

6.NAFS MARDIYYA – Approved Self (Al-Quran 89:28)​- Good Akhlaq like prophets, mix well with community, rida, continuous tafakur / contemplation of Allah

7.NAFS KAMIL – Perfect Self Constant remembrance of Allah in heart, tongue & action​, Highest pinnacle of human development eg Prophets, Messengers, top notch Wali ​​
